Andy Goldsworthy: Stone Work in America investigates the artist's on-going relationship to nature and specifically, stone, one of the key building materials of our physical world. Since the late 1970's, Goldsworthy has been using organic materials such as earth, stone, leaves, water, snow, ice and petals as sculptural elements, freely.

Ironically, while these relics garner little notice, the two stone walls created by sculptor Andy Goldsworthy and a team of craftsmen from Scotland and England in 1999 and 2010 are prime attractions at the Storm King Art Center. In 2001, when British artist Andy Goldsworthy was invited to Stanford to build a sculpture, he was immediately drawn to the warm yellow sandstone of the campus's oldest buildings. He designed "Stone River" as an expression of what he saw in the stone - that it was mobile and alive, on a trajectory through time, flowing like a river.

Goldsworthy used sandstone from a repository of materials salvaged from Stanford University buildings damaged in the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes to create " Stone River ". The fact that he only uses found materials makes this "boneyard" the perfect source for this project.
